California gun laws can be quite restricting, and one thing they don't allow is a pistol grip on a semi-automatic rifle. Therefore, you can't have an AR-15 in California unless it either has a fixed magazine or is featureless, i.e., it doesn't have a pistol grip, collapsible stock, or forward grip.
