Muzzle Devices: Muzzle Brakes, Flash Compensators, and More
Luckily, most AR barrels are externally threaded for easy muzzle device attachment: all you have to do is screw on your device and start shooting. Whether you’re trying to improve your stability while hunting, mask the flash produced by firing, or reduce recoil, a muzzle device could help you meet your shooting goals without replacing any major components.
Wing Tactical is proud to offer a wide variety of muzzle devices from today’s top small arms manufacturers. Our collection features muzzle brakes, AR-15 flash hiders, compensators, and more.

Muzzle Brakes
Muzzle brakes can help shooters reduce muzzle rise during repeated firing. By redirecting gases above and below the muzzle, they help shooters maintain barrel stability and hit their targets consistently.

Flash Hiders
Sometimes called flash compensators or flash cones, AR-15 flash hiders help mask the bright light produced when powder ignites during firing. While shooters may not even notice this flash in broad daylight, it could temporarily obscure shooters’ vision at night, impacting their situational awareness and ability to repeat fire.

Compensators
Compensators are primarily designed to reduce felt recoil by redirecting gases from the end of the barrel out to each side of the muzzle. They can also reduce muzzle movement during repeated firing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can an upgraded muzzle brake do?
Upgrading your muzzle brake improves your AR-15’s shooting performance in several ways, all in one component. The largest improvement you’ll notice right away is the reduced recoil. This is achieved by directing the gases that are escaping from the barrel out sideways. This redirection of the escaping gases horizontally will counter the rifle’s natural tendency to push the barrel of your rifle upwards and the platform itself into your shoulder. By redirecting the force onto both sides of your muzzle, you allow yourself to keep your sights on the target more easily and perform more accurate follow-up shots.
Our muzzle brakes also have a specially designed port that vents the escaping gas out slightly through the top, which creates downward pressure. As a result, you deal with less muzzle rise. This downward pressure will come in handy when you’re performing rapid-fire shooting. It allows you to keep your original line of sight on your target after the previous shot, which improves your shooting rhythm, and you’ll be able to pull off a tighter shot grouping as a result.
Competition shooters will notice the enhanced control and faster target acquisitions immediately. For those of us who use an AR-15 for home defense purposes, the reduced movement of the weapon means better accuracy in high-stress situations and allows for quicker follow-up shots. Regardless of your use for the AR-15 platform, you will notice a massive reduction in the felt recoil, typically between 50-70% when compared to your standard muzzle device.
What is a compensator?
Adding a compensator to your AR-15 gives you the best of both worlds. Think of the muzzle brake compensator as your all-in-one device. It lets you get the massive recoil reduction of a muzzle brake, combined with the additional muzzle-rise control of a compensator. This works through the specially designed ports on the compensator, which allow the escaping gases to only leave the end of the barrel in certain, specifically designed, directions. Typically, these are the side ports and the top port.
The side ports help manage the overall recoil of the AR-15 by forcing some of the gases horizontally, instead of directly out the front. Those redirected gases, which normally escape out the front, are what typically cause the rifle to push backwards into your shoulder. This reduces the felt recoil by anywhere from 50-70% right off the bat!
The top-facing escape port redirects the gas to leave through the topside of the muzzle, which causes slight downward pressure. This helps prevent muzzle rise during rapid-fire sequences. You’ll have noticeably less muzzle rise and be able to keep your sights on the target more effectively. This allows you to fire a second, third, or fourth round on target quicker than it normally takes.
These devices have been shown to be particularly valuable for both competitive shooters and tactical applications, where maintaining a clear sight picture between shots translates to better performance. The reduced muzzle rise and barrel movement allow for faster target acquisition and more precise shot placement. Especially during multiple-round engagements, where you may need to drop a target quickly and move onto the next one.
