Pistol Magazines And Accessories: What You Need If You Want To Shoot

You won’t get far shooting handguns without a handgun mag, and that mag sometimes needs accessories. Weighted baseplates, grip extensions, magazine extensions, and flared magwells are all options that bring some benefit to pistol shooting.

Each option has its own nuances as to why you would use it on your magazines. Most come down to increasing speed or comfort when using the gun. These tend to be those minor upgrades meant to shave seconds off the process or optimize some aspect of the gun and magazine.

Baseplates

Weighted base plates on pistol magazines make it easier for magazines drop free on a regular basis. The weight helps drag the magazine out of the gun once the mag release has been used, clearing the way for a new mag.

This is useful for competition, especially if you have a polymer magwell and polymer mags. Polymer-on-polymer tends to slow things down, but even metal magazines can benefit from more mass at the bottom.

Magazine Extensions

Magazine extensions usually add additional capacity to your standard magazine. This allows you to have more rounds available while adding weight to the bottom of the mag. This extra weight lets the mag drop free more consistently.

Some models are used only for extra weight and do not increase magazine capacity. These options are often California Compliant.

Grip Extensions

Some pistols have tiny grips while some people have extremely large hands. Grip extensions provide more grip by extending the grip past the magazine.

This is usually an issue on compact or subcompact handguns. Using an extension requires attaching it to the magazine, which means other magazine accessories are not compatible with a grip extension.

Flared Magwells

Flared magazines help pistol magazines go into the gun faster. The magwell on most pistols is a narrow space that can be missed under stress.

A flared magwell puts a ramp around the standard magazine well, allowing for a larger margin of error when reloading quickly. The ramp focuses the magazine into the magwell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are magazine baseplate extensions California Compliant?

Not all magazine baseplate extensions are California Compliant. Some extensions do not increase the magazine's capacity and are California-compliant. Others will increase the mag capacity and are not California Compliant.

Do I need a weighted baseplate on my pistol magazine?

In general, no. A weighted base plate is not needed. But if you want your magazine drop to be consistently free, a weighted magazine plate can help with this.

Why should I have a flared magwell on my gun?

Flared magazine wells or magwells help funnel the magazine into the gun. This helps speed up reloading and simplifies reloading under stress. Some magwell designs also help lock the shooter’s grip onto the gun due to the magwell’s flare.

What is a grip extension for?

A grip extension on a magazine is used to extend the grip of smaller pistols, usually compacts or subcompacts. These types of guns tend to have very small grips, and a grip extension helps minimize the inconvenience of the grip size.
