Why Magpul Stock is so popular?
There are times in any segment of the market when a name becomes synonymous with quality and success. In the shooting world, Magpul has achieved this status. No company can take the title of the best in the industry by any means other than consistently outperforming everyone else. Magpul has been doing exactly that for nearly two decades. We have lost count of the times we have heard the phrase, "it's almost as good as a Magpul", that means it's really not.
Many people refer to accessories like stocks, pistol grips, and handguards as furniture for your AR, and in the loosest sense of meaning that is accurate. However, components such as these are vitally important to the performance and success of your weapon. Let's face it, without a good stock your weapon is not really a weapon, it's just a jack handle.
Whenever a new Magpul stock is brought to the design table, their engineers take it as an opportunity to create a product that will make tactical ops more efficient and the shooter's life easier. You will quickly learn that Magpul puts ergonomics and tactile shooter interface at the front of the line when designing a new product to be the answer to an old problem. Curves, angles, locks, and slots are not part of any Magpul product just because they look good. Every facet of any Magpul rifle stock is there because that's where it should be, and it works.
Why Choose Magpul Stocks?
Everyone from the basic, backyard plinker to the most elite spec warrior not only should expect the best, but they should also demand it. With Magpul, that's exactly what you get every time. Some companies survive by feeding off the bottom, churning out cheap junk just to get by and waste your money. If that's what you want, go ahead and click around the internet and send your hard-earned money to companies that you never heard of. However, if you want to appreciate quality products that you can depend on to win and survive, then you're right where you need to be. There are a number of design features that will either make or break any rifle buttstock. Let's take a moment and consider some of the purpose driven facets of a Magpul buttstock.
Common Features on Magpul Stocks:
Out of all the elements that make Magpul stocks the first choice among serious shooters, the first feature I will delve into isn't actually a feature at all but more of a position. For any kind of consistent, accurate rifle work you must have a solid place to anchor your weapon for target acquisition. This position in relation to a rifle stock is referred to as a cheek weld. In short, it is a place on the buttstock where you can have a solid point on which to plant your cheek. This is important because without a solid cheek weld accuracy is nearly impossible.
Any Magpul buttstock you choose provides an ample area for you to easily acquire a positive cheek weld. Unlike some of the lesser quality buttstocks on the market, Magpul stocks are made just wide enough to work like a charm without getting in the way. That is important because in this case, you can have too much of a good thing. Magpul begins to design a product with the end in mind. They don't force a predetermined shape into a component simply because it looks good. Anything that Magpul makes has to be both functional as well as tactically useful. Magpul's good looks are a byproduct of form matched with function.
When you choose a Magpul AR stock you can go one of two basic ways. Either a trimmed down minimalist style or a buttstock that has more bells and whistles. One thing you will find on most models of the Magpul AR stock is storage compartments. Now you have to keep in mind that this is a buttstock we're talking about here. You're not going to be able to pack for a weekend trip in these storage compartments. However, they are adequate for such small items as batteries, cleaning patches, gun lube, small parts. When you're packing for the field, you will find the convenience of a little extra room invaluable. Additionally, keeping with the expected quality for which Magpul is known, your items will be secure. Weather or recoil will not cause the storage compartments to fall open, or become compromised in any way.
If a fixed stock is not in your game plan, then moving into a Magpul adjustable stock is the only way to go. Unwanted movement and noise is a common issue with lesser quality adjustable stocks. Most of the Magpul adjustable stocks include a friction lock as a standard feature. This little feature should never be considered a luxury, it is indeed a necessity.
Any wobble or movement in an adjustable stock simply breeds inaccuracy. Magpul’s friction lock makes your adjustable stock feel as solid as a fixed one. You don't want to cut corners when it comes to something so simple that makes such a huge difference in performance. Every time you shoulder and fire your AR you will appreciate the difference that friction lock makes in your Magpul adjustable stock.
Shielded Release Latch
All adjustable stocks are not created equal. Some lower quality stocks include features that, while necessary, are simply not well designed. However, this is not the case with Magpul products. While any adjustable stock will have a release latch, just where it's located and how it operates might leave a lot to be desired.
An adjustable Magpul AR15 stock does indeed have a release lever. The thing that stands out, in this case, is the thought that went into the design of Magpul stocks. Instead of just adding a release lever out of necessity, Magpul created a product that works flawlessly in any circumstances. The release lever found on an adjustable Magpul stock is shielded. Why is that such a big deal? The short answer is that if the release lever is not shielded, it will eventually cause a problem.
See, not everyone shoots from a bench at paper targets. When you have to move around, either in competition, hunting, or working real ops things happen. That unshielded release lever will snag on your gear or in the brush, and it will happen exactly when you don't need it to. At the very least that will break your concentration. Just think how composed you're going to be when old Mr. Murphy grabs that unshielded release lever and your cheap stock suddenly becomes self-collapsing. Therefore, Magpul incorporates a shielded release lever into their adjustable Magpul rifle stock to ensure that doesn't happen to you.
When you consider just which buttstock that you're going to rely on, there are two points of contact that are mutually important. We have already addressed the cheek weld, but the back end of that stock is just as significant. The new polymer composite construction of many available stocks provides you with a sturdy base. However, that alone is hardly enough for reliable operation. In order to securely mount and fire your weapon, the stock must have a quality rubber butt-pad in place. Magpul wouldn't dream of letting you try to operate without one.
Granted, you don't need a rubber butt-pad to absorb recoil because with most AR-15 weapons the felt recoil is not insane. Although there are other factors in play that make a rubber butt-pad critical. Consider for a moment the less than perfect conditions that may interfere with the perfect, solid shoulder mount of your weapon. Self-defense situations can be intense and many times develop quickly. It's not unrealistic that your rifle doesn't get mounted squarely on your shoulder. How about the fast-paced three-gun competition? Is your gun going to find that sweet spot every time? When things go crazy you need a good rubber butt-pad on your gun stock that will hang onto you and let you make that shot.
Thankfully, Magpul has a lineup of stocks that give you an option for a variety of shooting styles and conditions. You can find a Magpul AR stock with a rubber butt-pad that is slim, some are replaceable, while others can be adjusted for length of pull and even cheek rest height. So, the fact that a rubber butt-pad must ride on the back of your stock is a given. The only question is which particular model best suits your needs.
Built-In Sling Mounts
The standard AR-15 weighs in between seven and nine pounds. Even if you run an ultralight model, eventually it's nice to have a little assistance when moving around with your weapon. Pretty much unless your gun goes directly from the case to the shooting bench, at some point you're going to want to have some type of strap or sling on it. When you go with a Magpul AR15 stock, you have the luxury of its built-in sling mounts to accommodate your carrying needs.
Here at Magpul, they understand that everyone doesn't run the same gear. Therefore, they incorporated both mount points for quick detachable sling swivels, as well as, built-in sling loops. Now whichever type of sling suits your fancy will readily attach to your Magpul AR-15 stock.
Anyone with any type of formal weapons training will understand the importance of using a rifle sling. It comes into play operationally more so than just a lazy way of carrying your gun. Unless you're firing from a bench rest, using a sling when shouldering your weapon gives you another point of contact to help steady your aim. However, this isn't about training, it's about options. That means the options that choosing a Magpul AR-15 stock gives you. You will be hard to find a more secure, convenient way of attaching a sling to your AR than when you attach it to a Magpul buttstock.
Finally, we must address the issue of cosmetics. Regardless of how well a product is made or performs, it's appearance makes a huge difference. Do remember that a Magpul rifle stock is only one part of the bigger picture. In order to have a functional firearm, you're going to need a pistol grip and likely some type of forward grip as well. If you opt for a lower quality manufacturer from which to order your parts, you may well get just what you pay for. I'm talking about consistent colors.
Magpul stocks are available in either black, FDE (flat dark earth), OD green, or stealth gray. The important thing here is that so are their other accessories. Therefore, when the time comes to get the rest of your accessories, things are going to match. We know, maybe none of us are likely to be an expert on fashion, but when things don't match it can drive you crazy. So, just keep it simple. Get yourself a Magpul AR15 stock, and when you're ready to finish out the package come right back here to Wing Tactical for the rest.
