Details:
The AR-15's bolt catch is easy enough to use from the left side. Things get a little more awkward when you want to lock the bolt back without moving your firing hand around the receiver. That's the problem the Phase 5 Tactical EBRv1 addresses.
It attaches to a standard Mil-Spec bolt catch and extends a lever through the trigger guard. Once installed, your trigger finger can reach the bolt catch from the right side of the rifle. Push the lever down to drop the bolt. Push it up while pulling the charging handle back to lock the bolt open.
The original bolt catch still works normally, so you're gaining another way to reach the control rather than giving up the factory location.
Where the Phase 5 BAD Lever Comes in Handy
Reloads are an obvious use, but locking the bolt open is arguably where the extended lever earns its keep.
Take a double feed. Clearing one can involve removing the magazine and getting the bolt locked to the rear before working the stoppage out of the action. With a conventional AR control layout, that can mean shifting your hands around to operate the left-side catch while pulling the charging handle. The EBRv1 lets the firing hand handle the catch while the other hand works the charging handle.
There's less hand swapping involved, and that's really the point of the part.
It Works With the Bolt Catch You Already Have
The EBRv1 is a two-piece, heat-treated assembly rather than a complete replacement bolt catch. It mounts to an existing mil-spec AR-15 bolt catch, which is an important distinction if you're comparing it with one-piece extended controls.
That also means fit depends on having the standard-style catch the EBRv1 was made around. Proprietary or unusually shaped controls are a different story.
For a rifle that already has a Mil-Spec catch, the Phase 5 EBRv1 is a fairly direct modification: keep the familiar left-side control and add bolt lock and release access for the trigger finger.
