An Aftermarket Glock Recoil Spring and Spring Assembly: Keeping Your Gun Running

While OEM parts are great for a Glock, some users want more from their pistols. Whether that is a Glock recoil spring assembly, a single spring, a guide rod, or another internal accessory, Wing offers multiple versions of each. Match your model, Glock generation, and even colors (on some items) to satisfy your needs and preferences.

Upgrade your polymer guide rod to a stainless steel version. Increase your spring weight to work better with high-pressure ammunition. Or make your Gen 4 and Gen 5 Glock accept Gen 3 parts.

Glock Recoil Springs

A Glock recoil spring is a key component that contributes to reliability. A spring that is too light increases the wear and tear of firing the pistol, while a spring that is too heavy will prevent the gun from cycling under normal use.

Ammunition selection is one factor for determining how heavy of a spring you should use. Lower-pressure ammunition requires lighter springs, while higher-pressure ammunition requires heavier springs.

Glock Guide Rods

From the factory, a Glock pistol comes with a polymer guide rod. Glock does this to balance production costs with reliability. Some individuals are not comfortable using a thinner polymer guide rod in their pistol.

Upgrading the guide rod to steel provides peace of mind, improved balance, and greater durability to the system. Some steel models are even lighter than their polymer counterparts.

Strike Industries Recoil Spring Adapter

Glock Guide Rod Adapters and Accessories

Not all generations of Glock have compatible parts. But some accessories, like a guide rod adapter, can enable Gen 4 and Gen 5 Glocks to accept Gen 3 aftermarket parts, allowing for more variety and choice.

Be sure to read the compatibility requirements before purchasing an adapter and other parts upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you oil the recoil spring on a Glock?

No. Recoil springs do not need to be oiled in order to work. If you live in an area with higher humidity or other rust risks, wiping the spring with an oiled rag will help prevent rust. Be sure to use gun safe lubricants.

Do I want a heavier or a lighter recoil spring?

The spring weight you need is dependent on the ammunition you use. Higher pressure ammunition (+P or +P+) benefits from heavier recoil springs while lower pressure ammunition (standard or subsonic) benefits from lighter recoil springs. Although this will vary from gun to gun.

What does a recoil spring actually do?

Recoil springs slow the rearward travel of the slide and then provide the necessary force to send it into battery while it picks up the next round. This means they help prevent the gun from damaging itself during use.

What happens if a recoil spring is too heavy?

The gun will fail to cycle if you have a recoil spring that is too heavy, since the ammunition is not producing enough energy to compress it.

How long does it take to break in a recoil spring?

Most modern manufactured springs do not have a break-in period, but it is still recommended to run 200 to 500 rounds of ammunition through the gun to break in the spring and ensure it functions properly.
