Precision Armament Slim Hypertap

The 1/2x28 Muzzle Brake: Durable, Full-On Performance For Muzzle Devices.

The 1/2x28 TPI muzzle device world is largely geared towards 5.56 offerings but can range from .22 calibers all the way to .458 SOCOM. This means there is a 1/2x28 muzzle brake for your preferred modern caliber in a style that works for you. Other variations include flash hiders, compensators, blast shields, and faux suppressors. Each brings a different benefit to your rifle, shaped by how it is intended to be used.

KAK Industry Z24 Flash Hider

1/2x28 Flash Hider

Flash hiders dissipate the visible muzzle blast from firing. This does produce some recoil benefits similar to those of muzzle brakes or compensators, but these are secondary.

Using a flash hider will reduce the “fireball” effect that low-light shooting can produce. Flash hiders are good for shorter barrels that produce more muzzle flash.

Breek Arms 3QD Echo Muzzle Brake

1/2x28 Muzzle Brake

Muzzle brakes direct muzzle energy to the sides of the shooter and/or upwards to help reduce the gun’s motion under recoil.

Muzzle brakes are often paired with heavy-recoiling ammunition but are still used with lower-recoiling rounds to help keep the gun as flat as possible during recoil.

KAK Industry AUG LMG Compensator

1/2x28 compensator

Compensators provide more balanced redirection of muzzle energy. These help the most with rapid or automatic fire. These are not recommended for use in the prone position due to how much dirt they can kick up.

Normal compensators redirect muzzle energy evenly around the barrel. Linear compensators redirect the energy forward, away from the shooter.

Strike Industries Blast Shield A2 Birdcage

1/2x28 Blast Shield

Blast shields are often paired with muzzle brakes or compensators as a mounting base. These help contain the muzzle blast further to reduce the visible flash and concussion of a gunshot.

Using a blast shield can help reduce shooter fatigue by channeling the muzzle energy forward (similar to a linear compensator).

Spike’s Tactical 9mm Fake Can

1/2x28 Faux Suppressor

Faux or fake suppressors allow the average person to have the “coolness” of a suppressor without the additional hassle of cleaning and maintaining one.

These fake cans work similarly to blast shields in mitigating a visible muzzle flash but do not reduce the sound of a gunshot like a normal suppressor would.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a muzzle brake and a compensator?

Muzzle brakes help mitigate the lateral and vertical (side-to-side, up-and-down) recoil impulse of guns by redirecting muzzle energy to the sides and the top of the muzzle. Compensators distribute this energy evenly around the entire barrel.

Does what muzzle device I use matter?

Yes, depending on the performance you want out of your firearm, the muzzle device you use will matter. Choosing the right muzzle device will affect how your rifle performs.

Do I need a flash hider?

If you are using a barrel shorter than 20 inches, a flash hider can make it more comfortable to shoot in low light. A barrel under 16 inches has a higher likelihood of producing obnoxious muzzle blasts that need to be dissipated with a flash hider or blocked with a blast shield.

What is a linear compensator?

Linear compensators are a compensator variant that redirects a gun’s muzzle energy forward in a straight line (linearly). This creates a more direct recoil pattern while lessening discomfort from the muzzle blast.
