What Is The Purpose of the forward assist?
The AR15 forward assist is designed for manual movement of the bolt or bolt carrier forward when the return spring has failed to function properly. For the AR15 platform firearms, it is usually located at the rear of the upper receiver. When pushed by the firearm operator, it forces the bolt carrier to slide forward, ensuring that the bolt is locked in place. To prevent accidental movement, a significant amount of force is generally required to engage the bolt carrier. The forward assist can also be used in the event of a chamber check in a situation where stealth is necessary. Rather than allowing the bolt to move forward under maximum tension with the spring, it can be gently slid into position by hand and locked with the forward assist. Instead of the sudden and dramatic sound of a bolt slamming forward, a single click will be the only indication.
This feature of the AR rifle was first used in the Vietnam War. Before the invention of the forward assist, the M16 was carried in the "locked and loaded" configuration, with a round chambered and the safety engaged. Otherwise, the sound of 30 men in platoon pulling back and releasing the bolt handle all at once would provide the enemy with a very good idea of their location. The assist made it possible for soldiers to carry their firearms without the need to constantly have a round chambered.
