Frequently Asked Questions

Do all AR-15 magazines fit every AR-15 rifle?

One of the advantages of the AR platform is its modularity — it’s simple to swap out parts or add accessories because most AR-15 parts are compatible across manufacturers. However, keep in mind that your magazine of choice must contain rounds of the same caliber as your rifle. To help prevent ammunition mismatches, consider using magazine marker bands for easy identification.

What is a standard AR-15 magazine?

If you purchased a factory-assembled AR-15, it likely came with a 30-round magazine. However, you can purchase magazines in a variety of capacities to meet the needs of your shooting scenario.

Will an AR-15 fire without a magazine attached?

While you can fire an AR-15 without a magazine attached, you’ll only be able to fire one round at a time. If you pull back the charging handle to open the ejection port cover, place a round into the action, and release the handle to chamber a round, your AR-15 will be ready to fire as soon as you toggle the safety off.

When cleaning or examining your AR-15, make sure that the firearm is completely unloaded before handing it to someone or cycling the action. Remove the magazine and pull back the charging handle to confirm that there are no live rounds in the chamber.

Which magazine capacity should you choose?

Your chosen magazine capacity will depend on two major factors:

  1. The demands of your shooting scenario
  2. Your personal carry weight tolerance

If you’re primarily customizing your AR-15 for home defense, range practice applications, or pest hunting (shooting pigs or coyotes, for instance), choosing a higher-capacity AR magazine might be beneficial. However, ammunition is heavy; if you’ll only need to use a few rounds at a time or you’ll be walking a great distance with your firearm, you might opt for lower-capacity magazines.

Can you load 5.56 in a .223 magazine?

While you can load .223 in a rifle chambered for 5.56, you generally cannot safely do it the other way around. In general, a .223 Remington magazine can typically hold and feed 5.56x45mm NATO rounds, as these two cartridges are very similar in dimensions and overall design. However, it is important to note that some .223 Remington magazines may not be specifically designed or rated to handle the higher pressures associated with 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition. Rifles chambered for .223 generally fire at a max pressure of 55,000 PSI, while 5.56 fires at 58,000 PSI. As a result, it is always best to consult the manufacturer's instructions or specifications for the magazine to determine if it is safe to use with 5.56 ammunition. It is also important to ensure that the firearm itself is rated for use with 5.56 ammunition.
